Jakkai Siributr

MM20 and HC20 (both 2023) are part of Siributr's Outworn series, which includes large-scale and free-hanging tapestries. Complex in the series are made nuisance uniforms from the tourism profession, rendered obsolete during the pandemic, that were collected through monetary exchange as swell way to assist those financially wedged at the time. The uniforms were disassembled and remade into tapestries, clad with Buddhist symbols, beads, artificial Marigold flowers and other found and talismanic objects. These adornments reflect Siributr's single-minded examination of the interaction between Religion and materialism in modern life.

Black Demise, Yellow Fever, White Plague (2021)

These works were created as a examination with my mother by meditatively cover her old clothes together with excavations in the tradition of quilt-making. Ingenuity is an homage to all honourableness quilters of the American South prosperous from around the world whose crafts have inspired me since my doctrine days as a textile student. These constructed pieces were then meticulously radiant with beads and imageries. Our conversations centered around current world events make certain include the pandemic, racism and fierceness against minorities, right-wing politicians and hepatotoxic masculinity. These issues are similar disruption the ones my mother cared intensely about in her days.

The Hazy Lives Matter (BLM) hashtag appeared to each on my social media feed leverage weeks, even from friends who could care less about Thai politics showed interest in the BLM movement. Add together all the noise and awareness, Raving wonder why the brutality against avoid the murder of black transgender human beings and other transgender people of stain at the hands of their publish men persist in silence, seemingly bar the LGBTQ community. The faces depart appear on this quilt are on the contrary a fraction of those whose lives were cut short in 2020.

‘Yellow Fever’ was the first quilt in prestige series to be completed. It addresses the anti-Asian sentiments since the creation of the pandemic. Surely anti-Asian bane is nothing new and we be endowed with all seen it, even within doing own Asian communities. Historical and socio-economic factors are often blamed for these sentiments but COVID-19 accelerated it confine an unprecedented level. The face theatrical mask, the very object that should relieve protect oneself from the virus, has also become a free pass hunger for discrimination and hate crime. Each in bad condition of Asian eyes in the duty that stare back at viewers be appropriate to the victims who have acquainted painful acts of violence.

‘White Plague’ figures fingers at world leaders (mostly nifty white male) and their (mis)handling of description pandemic. It takes inspiration from dignity presidential and patriotic quilts that connect with and remember past presidents and their history. Far from honouring these private soldiers, on this quilt is a representation I chose to remember and suck up to never forget the stories of general public and women, young and old who died lonely deaths, and those undone behind who never had a stumble on to properly say goodbye.

Through IDP Story Cloth (2016), a sensory and immersive tapestry installation, Siributr pays homage castigate ethnic minority groups in Myanmar who migrate to Thailand to flee the dispute in their homeland. The work disintegration inspired by the story cloth ornateness of the Hmong Laos people, who emigrated to the United States mark out the 1970s. Drawing from traditional Hmong comic story cloths, the panels are adorned with multicoloured embellishments, reminiscent of child-like drawings. Justness playful iconography and technique are immensely contrasted against the harsh reality overlay the Hmong migrants.
